Magento

Meet Magento Japan

(Most contributing PHP repo in Github 2017)”とする統計結果を紹介。

Eugene氏からは「Tech Talk - GraphQL in Magento2 Eugene氏の講演

Community are the HEROES(コミュニティがMagentoを作っている)という言葉が印象的でした。

Contribution Dayの様子

松本の講演は、「インポスター症候群への対処‐You Are Good Enough」。

For English:

This blog post is the 23rd day of Magento Advent Calendar 2018.

The international conference organized by Veriteworks "Meet Magento 2018 Japan" was held on November 14, 2018 at Ikebukuro Sunshine City.
It was a big event which was competing to be number 1 or 2 in the year of 2018, and we would like to send you a pick-up report before this year is over.

From Magento there were 4 visitors to Japan, which is the largest number so far

This conference was held for the first time in November of 2015 and since it has been held once a year every November, so this year it was the fourth time.
Every year we would ask Ben Marks, who is the evangelist of Magento, to give a session in Japan, but this year, in addition to him, three other speakers from the Community Engineering team, which does regular meetings related to the Japanese localization project, came to Japan to give their sessions, so it was a session with the largest number of speakers so far with a total number of them being four.

The theme of the session by Max Yekaterynenko, who is the team director of the abovementioned Community Engineering team, was "Magento and Power of Open Source".
In order to demonstrate the power of Magento as a PHP development framework, he introduced statistical results showing that "Magento has been receiving the most source code from the community among PHP repositories published in Github in 2017".
It turns out that Magento’s number of code modification commitments from the open source community exceeds 50%, and bulkAPI was realized when communities from Australia and German made their requests.
Magento has been continuing developing while taking great care of the community even more than before, and also strong words have been said that such an attitude will not change even after the acquisition by Adobe.
There has also been an introduction on our Japanese localization project. Collaborators are still wanted.

For Volodymyr Kublytskyi and Eugene Shakhsuvarov from the Community Engineering team it was the first to join Meet Magento Japan.
Technical sessions on Magento 2 were held, one by Volodymyr on "Asynchronous & Bulk API" and one by Eugene on "Tech Talk - GraphQL in Magento2".

A session on "Magento Roadmap & Magento Association" was given by Ben Marks who has become a regular member of Meet Magento Japan.
The words “Community are the HEROES” have made a big impression. In addition, the team would like to attract everyone’s attention to its future progress as they proceed with considering various ideas in order to make the most out of the synergy as a member of Adobe team.

The Magento Contribution Day was held for the first time in Japan

A "Contribution Day" is usually held before or after a Meet Magento overseas conference. It was held on November 15 which was the next day after Meet Magento Japan, for the first time in Japan.

Four people from Magento who this time gave sessions at Meet Magento Japan and two people from Adobe Japan have participated in the event. Our staff with just one and a half months of experience with Magento have also participated and cooperated in the Japanese translations project, and people with various experiences and of various positions each made their "contributions".

We hope for participation of more Magento users next time.

Introduce our sessions

Three people from us gave their presentation.

Matsumoto's session was on "Dealing with the impostor syndrome- You Are Good Enough".
Impostor syndrome is a feeling that engineers often have, and it is accompanied with the thinking of "it's because I was lucky to be here now, and the evaluation by others is actually an overvaluation" and it is said to go along with a feeling like one is a fraudster. The introduced ideas were that "it is important to accumulate a small sense of accomplishment to gradually gain confidence in oneself, and that Magento's Github has tasks with which even beginners can contribute, and it is a community that gives a sense of security."

The session by Nishi covered the contents related to construction and operation of the Magento2’s Commerce version as "a case file of heavy traffic M2 site." The discussion covered server configurations, the database redundancy and its load distribution, as well as problems stemming from low search accuracy in Japanese at the time of building an EC site boasting 100 million PVs per month.

I myself talked about "psychology" which is my core occupation and something which has been a pillar of our operations alongside system development. In the opening, I stated the theme as "Understanding Psychology for EC site Management" and gave some psychological examples which can be utilized when constructing an EC site with increasing sales. In conclusion I talked about the importance of output including presentations during conferences.

The retention rate goes up when teaching and sharing with others, so it is essential for knowledge retention, for example, to create blogs with stories on failures, and I think that the accumulation of these things will contribute to the open source (the advent calendar is also being realized as part of it).

Summary

Although due to a limitation in the number of characters I have not mentioned certain things here, I think that it had also been a conference with a lot of sponsors’ booth exhibitions, presentations and operation cases unique to user companies, etc. as well as a conference for those who want to consider Magento and not only for the companies which are currently using it. Close to one half of participants joined the after-party which facilitated active information exchanges as if it was a "Meetup".

I would like to use this opportunity to thank our sponsors, speakers and every one of the participants once again.

How will Magento, which is now a member of Adobe, change in the future? I hope that we can take the initiative and find what we can do to contribute as members of the Magento community, and also hope that we will be able to be very active in the year of 2019.

I would like to ask for your continuous support from now on. Thank you very much.
